After just over 3 years of editing I'm jazzed to say that Cassette is finally picture locked! This means that while we're still in the process of sound mixing and color correcting, the story is locked in and all the visuals have been set. We've made the mixtape, now we're making it pretty. Thanks as always to our patient supporters who've been eager for the film to come out.
I'll be making a few exciting announcements in the coming weeks. This project has only been possible with the help of like-minded music nerds and I've been super fortunate to have met some very helpful collaborators in the last few months. We've been getting some terrific responses now that the film is almost ready, but we wouldn't have made it this far without the support from all of you. Thanks as always,
Zack and Team Cassette
Peace to Ron G
August 19, 2015
It's hard to talk about innovators on cassette without including Ron G in the conversation. One of the pioneers of DJ mixtapes, Ron has been scratching and producing for over 25 years. He's worked with Pac, Biggie, MJ, and countless other greats. So excited to sit down with him yesterday for CASSETTE!

Last week I freshened up the original trailer. Please spread it around if you dig it!
Big thanks to Simon Oxley at Greatcoat Films for pitching in with some great shots.

I'm excited to welcome a highly creative and experienced collaborator to the project!
Co-producer Christine Günther and her Berlin-based FIREGLORY Pictures will no doubt play a crucial role in ensuring the project reaches a broad, worldwide audience. She has worked closely with Cassette editor Georg Petzold. She still keeps her 90's hip-hop tapes in heavy rotation on her Walkman.
Christine is a welcome addition to the Cassette family as we gear up for our picture lock later this year. More on the horizon- stay tuned!

It's been a year since Cassette entered full-time post-production. In that time, the film has gone through six different storylines, with several variations inside of each of these versions. The film gets better and more focused with each new structure, although this process of revising has pushed the project into extra innings. I can't thank each of you enough for your patience and understanding throughout this journey. During the last 4 years I've gathered so many great tape stories- it's been a daunting task to make sure the strongest moments find their way into the finished film.
I've learned from speaking with other filmmakers that documentaries grow at their own speed. My buddy Josh Bishop got a well-deserved slot at this year's SXSW with his doc Made in Japan after 11 years of hard work. And while Cassette is on track to wrap up this year, I've learned the importance of not rushing it. Thank you all again for your patience throughout this process.
More to come!

Hey Everyone! Sorry for the radio silence! There's a lot of news to catch you up on - the film is still in post-production but we're still working harder than ever to get it done. I'll be back soon with a full report, but in the meantime I've updated the Timeline section of the site. More info coming soon!
An Amazing Interview with Rob Sheffield!
September 13, 2014
One of my favorite interviews yet! Georg and I sat down with Rolling Stone Contributing Editor and Author Rob Sheffield last week and talked tapes for a few solid hours! This guy blows my mind. We're sneaking him in to the rough cut as we speak!!

SOUNDTRACKING with EMILY MELANDER from Zack Taylor on Vimeo.
By far the best part of the edit process for me has been compiling a homemade, tape-recorded soundtrack with my talented and beautiful friends around town. Here's a tiny clip from an afternoon spent with my dear friend Emily Melander, a talented Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter!
Ms. Melander sings lyrical, melodic, whimsical songs that translate beautifully onto magnetic tape.
Stick around for more updates in the next few weeks as we get ready to start submitting to festivals.
From Holland with Love!
August 29, 2014
I just got back from Holland, where I spent an amazing 3 days with Lou Ottens, inventor of the cassette (and co-creator of the CD).
Lou is an inspiration- he's 88 and still going strong.
There's lots happening with the doc now- apologies for the radio silence. We are working full-time on post-production, and are on track to start submitting to film festivals starting next month, with the film completed later this year.
At this very moment we are compiling the soundtrack (through found tapes, our own home recordings, and other music that is first being mixed down to tape).
Thanks for hanging on. Watch this space.
